Mottainai

Mottainai is a Japanese saying used to express regret for wasting something valuable.

Andrijs is the driving force behind this project and works as an architect and avid hobby chef at the interface between food and architecture.

Mottainai thinks about what a city without waste could look like. For Broei's project, we start from the Flemish home-garden and kitchen refrigerator that fundamentally changed our way of storing food and introduced a way of dealing with food that, according to Mottainai, urgently needs to be revised. We look for alternatives for storing food that do not lead to waste and consider how these can also be spatially shaped in the city. Design-based research combined with cooking and eating together will be our tools to think further about this.
